I love breakfast, there's nothing better than starting your day off with a delicious meal. Bill and I have gone back and forth about what to do tonight for New Year's Eve. We knew we were going to avoid the crowd and the 'Prix-Fixe' menus. What better way to end our 2011 than with a slew of delicious meals and snacks homemade by ME! Our morning started with a delicious 'WREATH.' I wish I had taken pictures of the final product but my hands were messy and greasy after handling the bacon that it was completely out of the question. Bill told me it looked exactly like the picture (score!) and it was incredibly tasty! I'm not normally a bacon-eater but we had a package of maple bacon from Amana, I couldn't resist. I definitely think it was a great meal with a lot of potential, I'm envisioning the next one having spinach and tomato in it for some color.

It's Easy Being Green!
It's happened to me a couple times, I go to a store specifically to buy something for a birthday or a special day. I walk out with a great gift.... that ends up being perfect for me. I recently purchased the book 'Easy, Green Living' by, Renee Loux as a stocking stuffer for someone in my life (this book is relevant to many of my family members) and I ended up flipping through it and wanting to dog-ear pages. Well, it's past Christmas and it's still here so I guess it belongs to me, although I'm sure that I'll be lending this out. My Mom and I read through a couple interesting facts yesterday and I know my Mother-In-Law would love the easy, green suggestions and tips. I can't say enough good things about this book, it's not really a reading book but more like sections of your home and ways to green them. It's complete with recipes and suggests eco-friendly products. It is a great guide to make your environment safer! So here's another recipe to enjoy:
Lavender-Lemon Disinfecting Spirits Spray
1/4 C. vodka
1/2 C. 3% hydrogen peroxide
1 C. water
5 drops grapefruit seed extract (optional)
10 drops essential oil of lavender
5 drops essential oil of lemon
In a spray bottle, combine all ingredients and gently swirl around. If you shake the hydrogen peroxide will fizz up and then go flat. Spray on various surfaces and wipe with a clean cloth. It smells so fresh and energizing!

DIY Cutting Board Sanitizer
I've been looking for a way to clean our bamboo cutting board without damaging it. When we received the board it was mentioned that you should just wipe it down with oil every so often. Great idea, but lately I've been questioning the cleanliness of it. There was absolutely no way that I would ever use a cleaner on it (we mostly use Norwex anyhow). We never cut meat on the board, just vegetables and breads. I recently came across this sanitizer and had to share, it works like a charm and now you can tell the board is fresh!
1/4 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup white distilled vinegar
4 drops of grapefruit seed extract (optional)
4 drops essential oil of oregano (optional)
1 tablespoon baking soda
Mix all ingredients 3except for the baking soda in a bowl or in a spray bottle. Sprinkle the baking soda on the cutting board. Spray the board or dip a sponge into the mixture and start scrubbing the board. It fizzes up immediately! Wipe the board down with fresh water before using it.

Rehab!
Oh my goodness. I seriously, seriously love Pinterest. However, it's a catch-22. I spend tons of time looking at recipes, home ideas, craft creativity etc. and in actuality a lot of my 'pins' have come into fruition, lots of new recipes have been made lately. Pinterest is fantastic especially if you are in a rut, you need some inspiration and illumination into the right brain to kick-start your mind! Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself, if you don't know what Pinterest is ~ well, it's a virtual board (you can make as many as you want and organize them into categories like "My Style", "Recipes", "Favorite Places and Spaces" etc.) When you find something on the site or online you simply 'Pin It' onto a specific board for future use. How cool is that?!
If you aren't a member you can request an invitation. I thought I'd post a couple of my favorite things on tonight's blog:
Pre-made HEALTHY lunches : BID RED KITCHEN
Vanilla Brown Sugar Scrub (HAND-MADE!): By Stephanie Lynn
Fun quotations all over the site. Some to hang, some to remember, and some just plain silly! I loved this one not only for the meaning but also for the photography and illustration.
Incredible ideas for handmade goodies: Talk Crafty To ME!
Tips on growing indoor plants: TipNut
Yummy cookie ideas: SIX SISTERS

Sunday
I love weekends... sleeping in and making breakfast with my husband. The biggest decision we have to make is whether to make pancakes or waffles.
Homestyle Blueberry Waffles
•2 eggs, separated
•1 1/2 cups milk
•1/2 cup melted butter
•2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
•2 teaspoons baking powder
•1/2 teaspoon salt
•1 tablespoon sugar
•1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries, rinsed
In a small mixing bowl, beat egg whites until stiff; set aside. Beat egg yolks; add milk and melted butter. Sift dry ingredients together; add egg yolk mixture and mix until smooth and fold in blueberries. Gently fold in beaten egg whites. Bake in a hot waffle iron. Makes about 6 blueberry waffles.

Paw-prints
Today, I am letting go.... of pain, hurt, guilt I have so often felt in the past surrounding our beloved dog, Rocky. I rarely discuss the events of the fateful evening that changed my life in so many ways. To write about this, literally hurts me, I physically hurt. My throat is closed, my body is tight and my heart aches but I truly have to let this go. I have to move on and treasure the memories made and not let this control my feelings any longer. I have heard it said, that the level of pain we feel when a pet passes away equals the level of love we shared with our dogs while they were with us.
I let Rocky outside in the evening, Bill had just left to help his sister move her television. We never went out with Rocky, he knew the yard boundaries and always came back to the front porch when he was done doing his business. As I shut the door, he looked back at me and our eyes met for a couple seconds. I was hyper-aware of this situation, I remember looking into his eyes and moments later he turned away and I shut the door. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I wished I could have done things differently. I would have given anything to have called him back in, to go outside with him and watch him, for anything but our outcome.
Glimpses.... I see lights, I see cars stopped in front of our house... I see a woman running through our yard... Confusion. "Do you have a yellow lab? He's been hit. He's alive." That moment is.. surreal.
He's alive, he's alive. I am under the car with him, he's breathing hard and with every breath a mist of blood comes out. They tell me he tried to get up. The couple is heartbroken, so upset. I continue to tell them it's not their fault, honestly, I feel so bad for them. Both sides of this situation are unbelievably horrible to be in. Rocky is 90 lbs., 13 years old, has arthritis in the hips but I just know that he's going to make it, he has to, there is no way that it ends like this. I call Bill frantically "Get home now, get home! Rocky is hurt, help me!" As he's racing home, I put my arms around Rocky, I put my forehead to the ground. The weather is freezing, I'm outside in a t-shirt and don't feel a thing, I was completely in shock. Bill has rushed home, I go inside for a towel and we transfer Rocky into our car.
Racing down the street, I am literally going 30 mph over the speed limit. I remember Bill being in shock, holding Rocky and stroking his fur. I remember yelling "Talk to him, tell him he's going to make it!" "Rocky, don't you dare let go, you are going to be okay, you are so strong buddy!" And Rocky is holding on, he's struggling but he's holding on for us.
We pull up to the Emergency clinic and they rush Rocky back to evaluate the situation. Bill and I sit there in silence. They update us every couple minutes, the doctor is optimistic. We are invited back after about a 1/2 hour. They are out of options.... I remember asking "If this was your dog, what would you do?" The look in her eyes said it all, the doctor and vet tech are both crying. This cannot happen. The doctor offers to euthanise him after we compose ourselves. At that moment, I put my hand on the small of his back and start talking.... "Rocky, we are here. We love you so much. We want you to let go. You have been so strong for us, we love you. Rocky, go to heaven, sweetheart. Let go. It's okay, Rocky, let go." Heart rate slows down... slower and slower. His final moments are peaceful, we surround him with our love, he is gone in less than a minute.
I don't remember much after that, everything is blurry. We are given time with him in a small room. We write a large, large check. We choose to have him cremated. A slow fog of guilt begins to creep in, I am unaware at first. Bill says over and over "This is not your fault." I pretend to listen, I pretend to be okay.
No matter what anyone has said, I have continued to feel guilt for 2 years. If I hadn't let him out, this would not have happened. Simple as that. The situation was out of my control but I could control the feelings I had, and immense guilt built up. In fact, as each day passed, I wasn't feeling better, I was letting this affect my life in a big way. I have had a very hard time putting into words the stress it amounted to. It has taken over 2 years for me to write this, to actually really put into words what happened that night and how it has impacted how I live my life.
Many lessons were learned that night. Life changed. As silly as this sounds, it made me realize that bad things happen to good people. Simple as that. I will never, ever, ever let a dog out without watching him. And I will always have anxiety when my dog is outside. But I will be ok.
There is no comfort to come out of this situation.... but it could have been so much worse. Rocky fought to hard for us in the end, he knew he wasn't alone, he let go when he knew we were ready. We'll never know what he was doing in the road, we'll always question that. I ache for his presence, what I wouldn't give to have his wet nose nudge my hand for the 100th time to pet him. It might be the end of his time with us but it is the beginning of his time as our guardian angel.
How lucky Rocky was to have been loved by our family. Even more, how lucky our entire family is to have had him in our lives and be loved by him. I truly feel that Rocky was a blessing to Bill and I in our home. We loved him with all of our hearts.

Tear-jerker
I have never seen anything like this and I had to share! First of all, how wonderful of the family to rescue a wild animal and show compassion. Secondly, this is simple proof that the bond between a mother and baby is unbreakable.... no matter of you are human or animal. Fair warning, you should have a box of tissues handy!
I ask people why they have deer heads on their walls. They always say because it's such a beautiful animal. There you go. I think my mother is attractive, but I have photographs of her. ~Ellen DeGeneres
Year-round Tidings
I love the simplicity of this project. It is under $10 and can be used year-round. I discovered the idea on http://www.pinterest.com/ ~ if you aren't a member, you should be :) It was being used a a Christmas wreath to display all of your cards for the season. I started the project with lots of greens and reds... and then I started thinking and brainstorming about how often this 'wreath' would be used. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas time, so much so that I am that crazy person that keeps the decorations up until my husband gives me an ultimatum.
My thought process was as follows.... "This would be cute to put school pictures of our nieces & nephews".... "Bill hates putting pictures up on the fridge".... "We have so many cute things we could hang on here".... "I have so much scrapbooking paper that I'm never going to get around to using!" Hence, the year-round wreath.
I used a 14" embroidery hoop ($4.99 at a craft store) and clothes-pins (.97 for 50!). Cut small strips of scrap-booking paper and glue (with a stick) onto the clothes-pins. Then hot glue gun the clothes pins onto the embroidery hoop ~ make sure that every other clothespin is facing the opposite way. This way you can really, really load it up with pictures and cards! Add a nice ribbon to hang and wa-la!
Right now we have 'thank-you' cards, pictures and fun stuff from the last couple months. Now that December has finally come along we are starting to get Christmas cards and filling the wreath with holiday greetings and great pictures! This post card pin is one of my favorites.
And the final product, I wish I had a better picture, it really doesn't do it justice...

Photography has been a fun hobby for me since we purchased our Nikon camera. This season, I'm thankful for the family and friends who have invited me to capture moments of their life.
Merry Christmas from Jim, Becky & Joshua!

Picture This....
I had the pleasure of spending time with the Dahl family this morning. Keri and Ben are two of the best parents I know and they were kind enough to invite me to the park to get some Christmas images. Their daughter, Preslee Paige is one of the most adorable babies I've seen, she is laid back and very easy to photograph! With freezing temperatures and without a morning nap she was still a little ham today! Here's a sneak peek....

Christmas Spirit
I'm getting into the Christmas spirit today :) Putting the tree up, getting the stockings hung, getting all of the knick knacks in the perfect spot, and wrapping presents. One of my favorite pasttimes is wrapping all of the presents and putting them under the tree. In my Scentsy warmer is one of my favorite holiday scents, Mistletoe. My Pandora radio is playing a combination of Michael Buble (Holiday) and Christmas Piano. As the song joyfully sings, "It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas"! What's even more exciting is that I have the majority of my Christmas shopping FINISHED. That's right, I'm nearly done! Next on my list, getting a little creative this year with some of my Pinterest ideas!! This cute 'Christmas Card Wreath' is on my to-do list today! Both of these are adorable and I can't wait to personalize my own.

THANKS-giving
Every holiday, Bill and I race around to see everyone in our family that is local, which is pretty much everyone but my Mom's side in St. Louis and part of my Dad's side scattered on each coast. Our Thanksgiving consists of:
Waking up.... putting the lasts preparations on the 3-6 dishes I make (I usually take 1-2 dishes per Thanksgiving.) Heading over to have Baumhauer Thanksgiving brunch. This consists of WAY too much food, games with the kids, YouTube videos to appease my brother and listening to my Dad say random things over and over like "Ashley's Party Potatoes!" or "Have you tried that cheese? Wow, that cheese is good! Have you tried it?" Bill and I leave after a couple hours vowing to not eat again for the rest of the day.
Next, we stop at our house QUICKLY to grab the dishes we've made for the next Thanksgiving and we head to Sandy and Kevin's house. We continue to eat more and more.... we start becoming lethargic. This is about the time I wish that I had worn yoga pants for the day. Bill might play a game of euchre while I read Black Friday ads. We might play some video games with Mickey and Leah but mostly we just relax and digest. We make serious, solemn promises that we are not going to eat anything else.
After that, we're off to the next one! A quick stop at the house to soak the used dishes and grab the rest of the food. Since Aunt Karen's birthday is around Thanksgiving The Grabe's have a celebration around the indoor pool at Riverside Casino. This is not a typical Thanksgiving, this is appetizers and treats and fun goodies. We both fill plates, usually about one of everything. There is always a card game happening, usually 31 or 313. We are literally in a food coma but we play card games until we can barely hold our eyelids up. Oh and did I mention that we've forgotten a Thanksgiving? Yes, we have opted to not participate in the Grabe Thanksgiving at the Community Center every year (since that is about the same time as the Baumhauer Thanksgiving). Can you imagine trying to fit all of that in?
Last week, we were discussing our travel strategy and I must say both of us were dreading the hustle and bustle of the day.... Last night, we made a realization.... we are thankful for our crazy Thanksgiving! We are so lucky to be able to see everyone we love (give or take a small percentage) in 1 day! We are so lucky that we get to enjoy amazing meals with amazing people. I never want to take for granted the memories that we have created and will continue to create on Thanksgiving!

I could never....
~Live without my family. I talk to Mom, Dad, and brother almost daily. I can't imagine being without their encouragement, sarcasm, and wise words.
~Imagine not getting along with my second family.... I love these families with every cell in my body. I was welcomed into both families with open arms, amazing.
~Be the woman I am today without my Grandma Baumhauer's influence. I only hope that I can be the woman that she was.
~Exist without my piano....
~Turn my back on animal welfare and rights. There are too many animals that are mistreated and abused for me to turn a blind eye.
~Not be myself... even if that means making a complete fool out of myself at times.
~Thank God enough for making me an Aunt. Thank you Drew, Heather, and Lauren.
~Figure out why this man married me... ;) He's awesome and I guess that makes me awesome too!
~Take moments like these for granted...
